MDXC – Red and White Varsity Boys Race

Gilman edges Middletown for team title as Miyagishima wins MDXC Red & White Varsity Boys race

HUNT VALLEY, Md. — Hammond senior Trevor Miyagishima broke away from a talented lead group to capture the Red & White Varsity Boys individual championship, while Gilman survived a three-point battle with Middletown for the team title at the MDXC Invitational on Oct. 10 at Shawan Downs.

Miyagishima turned in a personal-best 15 minutes, 49.6 seconds to become the only runner in the race to break 15:50. Long Reach junior Pierce Eatough also dipped under the 16-minute barrier, finishing second in a personal-best 15:59.1.

Behind them, the race for the remaining top-five positions was exceptionally tight.

La Plata senior Trevor Thompson finished third in a personal-best 16:01.5, Park senior Jonah Cowan was fourth in a personal-best 16:03.4, and Gilman sophomore Leo Bowen crossed fifth in 16:05.3. Guilford Park senior Parker Lewis followed in 16:06.0, and La Plata senior Lucas Alarie was seventh in 16:06.9.

That put the second- through seventh-place runners within just 7.8 seconds of one another and gave the Red & White race seven runners under 16:07.

While Miyagishima controlled the individual standings, the team championship developed into one of the closest battles of the day.

Gilman captured the championship with 112 points, edging Middletown by only three points.

Bowen’s fifth-place finish gave Gilman an important low number at the front. Freshman Hersh Satpute followed in 14th with a personal-best 16:52.9, and freshman Benicio Benitez finished 25th in 17:18.3. Senior Cian Connolly placed 28th in 17:25.6, and sophomore Benjamin Burns completed Gilman’s scoring five in 40th at 17:40.4.

Gilman’s five scorers combined for 1:25:22.5, averaging 17:04.5.

Middletown countered with a tighter scoring pack and nearly overtook Gilman. Sophomore Landon Halvorson led the Knights with an 11th-place finish in a personal-best 16:40.8. Junior Levi Derr was 21st in 17:13.9, junior Nathan Phillips finished 24th in 17:17.9, senior Samuel McRea was 26th in 17:22.3, and sophomore Benjamin Aguilar completed the scoring in 33rd at 17:28.2.

That gave Middletown a scoring spread of only 47.4 seconds, with all five scorers among the first 33 scoring runners. The Knights finished with 115 points, leaving the championship separated by just three.

Atholton finished third with 139 points, led by senior Logan Mennealy’s ninth-place finish in a personal-best 16:37.8 and junior Brady Proebstle’s 15th-place performance in a personal-best 16:59.2. Austin Booker, Miko Evangelista, and Zachary Werner completed Atholton’s scoring five.

School Without Walls finished fourth with 160 points and used one of the tighter scoring groups near the front of the standings. Lars Kearney led the Penguins in 16th at 17:05.5, followed by Pierce Leen in 29th, Malcolm Laskowski in 31st, Nico Schoenbauer in 36th, and Felipe Mesa in 48th.

Charles E. Smith rounded out the top five with 194 points, narrowly beating McDonogh, which finished sixth with 195. Mount Airy Christian Academy was seventh with 201, La Plata eighth with 213, Frederick ninth with 220, and Winters Mill completed the top 10 with 288.

The results also illustrated how dramatically individual front-runners can shape a large cross-country team race. La Plata put two runners in the top seven, with Thompson third and Alarie seventh, while Mount Airy Christian Academy had two in the top 10 behind Bo Korn’s eighth-place 16:21.6 and Gabriel Tully’s 10th-place 16:38.6.

But Gilman’s depth ultimately made the difference.

With five scorers among the first 40 scoring positions and contributions from two sophomores, two freshmen, and one senior, Gilman accumulated just enough points to withstand Middletown’s tightly packed scoring five and emerge from the 29-team field with a three-point victory.

At the front, Miyagishima’s performance stood apart. His 15:49.6 victory was 9.5 seconds ahead of Eatough and more than 11 seconds clear of the rest of the field, giving the Hammond senior the individual Red & White championship on a day when his personal-best performance was the only sub-15:50 finish in the race.

Top five individuals: Trevor Miyagishima, Hammond, 15:49.6; Pierce Eatough, Long Reach, 15:59.1; Trevor Thompson, La Plata, 16:01.5; Jonah Cowan, Park, 16:03.4; Leo Bowen, Gilman, 16:05.3.

Top five teams: Gilman, 112; Middletown, 115; Atholton, 139; School Without Walls, 160; Charles E. Smith, 194.
