ERICKSON SCORES 1,000TH CAREER POINT AS EDGEWOOD ROLLS PAST RISING SUN 57-33
EDGEWOOD — Jael Erickson reached a career milestone Monday night, scoring her 1,000th career point to help power Edgewood to a 57-33 victory over Rising Sun in girls varsity basketball action.
Erickson finished with 16 points while anchoring the defense with six rebounds and three steals. The milestone bucket came early in the game, igniting the home crowd as the Lady Rams improved to 16-2 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 16-0.
“It feels amazing, especially because I faced pretty big setbacks in freshman year with injuries,” Erickson said. “It was one of my big goals to reach 1,000 points, and now that I’ve done that, it feels like a weight off my shoulders because I really wanted to reach this goal.”
Edgewood set the tone early, building a 14-3 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Rams extended their advantage to 21-12 at halftime before pulling away in the second half with balanced scoring and defensive pressure.
Sam Donovan led Edgewood offensively with 25 points while adding seven assists and seven rebounds. Alijah Nickelson contributed six points and extended multiple possessions with her energy play.
Rising Sun was led by L. Covert with 13 points. The Tigers struggled to generate consistent offense against Edgewood’s defensive intensity, managing just three points in the opening quarter.
Erickson credited her parents for their support throughout her journey to 1,000 points.
“I definitely want to thank my parents,” she said. “They are the ones who drove me to every game, drove me to every practice, and support me in every game. They make posters, they make everything a big deal. They have been my number one supporters, and I really appreciate them.”
With postseason play approaching, Erickson expressed confidence in the Lady Rams’ championship aspirations.
“I feel really good about it. I feel really confident in our team,” she said. “Every win that we have is a full team effort. When it matters, we are all going to come in and play together and achieve a big win for our team and our school.”
Edgewood continued its strong finish to the regular season with two additional victories later in the week. The Lady Rams defeated North Harford 54-40 on Feb. 10 and Harford Tech 55-24 on Feb. 11 to close the regular season at 18-2 overall and a perfect 18-0 in the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference. Edgewood will look to secure a conference championship on Tuesday, Feb. 24. The opponent is to be determined. The UCBAC championship games will be held at Aberdeen High School.
